The Basic Styles of Lighting Fixtures

Homeowners looking to brighten a home have various styles of lighting from which to choose.

Homeowners looking to brighten a home have various styles of lighting from which to choose. Fortunately, there’s a light fixture to suit all tastes and home designs. Here’s a look at the most common styles of lighting fixtures:

Recessed lighting

Recessed lighting is built directly into the ceiling and is either flush or slightly protruding. This style of lighting creates smooth lines and doesn’t attract any attention. However, one can change the lighting by utilizing different beam angles and light spreads.

Track lighting

Also known as monorail lighting, track lighting consists of an electrified track mounted to a wall or ceiling with moveable lighting fixtures attached. One benefit of this lighting style is the ability to move and aim each light in different directions at any time.

Chandeliers

A chandelier is a standard lighting fixture that typically hangs from a ceiling with a rope, chain, or other decorative means. They come in different styles, from traditionally elegant with numerous lights to more modern, rustic, and eclectic looks. Primarily used in foyers and dining rooms, a chandelier is usually the focal point of a room.

Linear LED

One can quickly light hard-to-reach spaces using linear LED lighting. However, these aren’t the primary source of a room’s light, so one can often add these lighting strips to unique spaces. Places of use include ceiling coves, built-in cabinets and bookcases, and accent lighting.

Pendants

Similar in appearance to chandeliers, pendants hang from the ceiling. However, these only have a single lighting element and have a less formal look. Pendants can be used decoratively by hanging several together or can be used to light a specific area, such as a kitchen island.

Sconces

A sconce is a lighting fixture that is attached to a wall. They are more commonly used in hallways or bathrooms; however, they can be used in any room. Usually not used as the primary source of a room’s lighting, they can be helpful in task-specific areas, such as on both sides of a work desk.

Ceiling lights

Ceiling lights are mounted flush or semi-flush to the ceiling and are helpful in rooms that require a primary overhead light source. They come in various styles to suit any room’s lighting needs.

Floor and table lamps

These are movable lighting fixtures that are standard in most homes. Types and styles are wide-ranging and can be used for ambient lighting, task lighting, or used solely for decoration.

Distinguish the home with the best lighting fixtures

With so many types and styles to choose from, selecting the right lighting fixtures can be an overwhelming experience. However, being armed with the knowledge of the different styles can help make a choice easier.
